Wirkungsmechanismus
Clotrimazol
Das Wirkungsspektrum von Clotrimazol umfasst in vitro Dermatophyten (z.B. Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton rubrum, andere Trichophyton Spezies, Epidermophyton floccosum und Microsporum Spezies), Hefepilze (z.B. Candida albicans, andere Candida Spezies und Trichosporon Spezies) und Schimmelpilze (z.B. Aspergillus Spezies) und einige grampositive Bakterien.
Der antimykotische Effekt von Clotrimazol ist nach derzeitiger Kenntnis auf eine Hemmung der Ergosterol-Biosynthese zurückzuführen. Ergosterol ist ein essentieller Bestandteil der Zellmembran von Pilzen.

Hexamidin
Hexamindin ist ein Antiseptikum. Hexamidin verstärkt die Wirkung von Clotrimazol insbesondere gegen Candida und ist auch gegen gramnegative Keime wirksam. Es eignet sich daher für nässende und erosive Pilzinfektionen der Zehenzwischenräume mit bakterieller Superinfektion (sog. "Athletenfuss"). Imazol Creme ist daher für stark nässende erosive Infektionen der Zehenzwischenräume geeignet.
